![]() ![]() The thing about Reaper is that it can be the perfect piano roll, it's just that the default sucks. I suspect more DAWs will take from that piano roll after every year. I mean seriously google "best piano roll in a DAW". I love Reaper but they need to change their default piano roll. Of course that could be different for other people. I was just saying i've been using Cakewalk for over a decade and have never had a need to use anything else and preferred it to Pro Tools. If you're just starting out by all means try all you want and pick the best one. If I'm getting the results I want with little to no frustration, what am I gaining with a new DAW? Not saying that to be snarky, just genuinely asking.ĮDIT: My comment was not to say people should use Cakewalk over something else. And anything not built into Cakewalk I've added, virtual instruments, sequencers, drum VSTs, dozens of effect plugins. I hear what you're saying, but having learned in school and as an intern/editor on Pro Tools, then used professionally for a time, and being comfortable with Cakewalk for 15 years now for personal use, I just don't see how a new DAW would do anything but make me re-learn how to do things I can already do with lightspeed. But I don't see any reason it should be an issue if you have the hardware that will support it. However, I can't speak to intense multitrack recording as I've never recorded more than 2 tracks at a time with it. But for home recording I've found it plenty good.Īll third party plugins i've tried, and there have been many, have worked well. It's probably not as popular as other DAWs because it doesn't come included on any OS, they don't do marketing and it was never an industry standard. The current version also includes very good virtual instruments and stock plugins that I use all the time.Ĭakewalk has a dedicated userbase and an active forum for discussion and help. I can't compare it to anything other than ProTools but I find Cakewalk was more intuitive and I like the user interface better. ![]() I was thrilled to find out that the latest version is completely free. I've used ProTools as well and I prefer Cakewalk. I've never had the need to use another DAW. I've been using it for about 15 years, when it was still SONAR and you had to pay for it. ![]()
